What if all those animals that run out in the middle of the road are actually part of a sect of warriors who must prove their courage by darting out in front of those strange metal monstrosities that travel through their land? The closer they get to being hit, the more courageous they are. Fresh carcasses and/or greens are given to the families of the fallen. Those that prove their courage are part of an elite sect of warriors who will one day rise to fight the metal monstrosities.
