So I was talking to my sister about Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey. Her response was to scoff. So what if people want to be stupid? Besides, it's more the horrible writing than the topic that turns her off, anyway. She can tell fantasy, and that's all that type of romance is: fantasy. Of course she knows it would be abusive in real life.
That's not quite how it works.
Even in our so-called 'modern' life, domestic violence is as popular as it is for a reason. The male/female relationship in those series? Very common. That type of fucking mindset? Very common.
Who has been told not to be offended when someone was flirting with you? It's flattering.
Who has been told that you're a tease when you say no? You can't expect to act that way and not put out. Who cares if you only went to the bar for a drink and to watch the game? Or that all you did was smile politely at them?
It's not rape if you really wanted it. Come on, admit it. You got hot and bothered. You were asking for it. You wanted it at the very end, at least.
You were dating him. Of course he expected sex. What the hell were you thinking?
Guy stares at your ass? Be flattered. Guy grabs your ass? He's just teasing.
Your guy or potential guy wants to know where you're going? He has that right. You want to know where he's going? Why the hell do you want to know?
Oh, you're looking at some other guy? Whore. Oh, he's looking at some other woman? He's a guy; it's to be expected. Boys will be boys.
What, you don't like that sex act? Don't you trust him? Are you frigid then?
Well, you didn't mean it when you said no. You were playing hard to get. He knew you would like it.
He's only doing it out of love. You should be grateful.
You asked for it.
People have a wide variety of kinks. Some people have their specific kinks because they know those kinks are wrong and like to indulge them in fiction, where no one will get hurt, where it's not real, knowing that if it happened in real life they would be disgusted or horrified. Other people's kinks translate over but they're consensual and no one gets hurt (without permission).
Other people don't know this. Too many women equate the relationships in Twilight and Fifty Shades to real life relationships for a reason. There is no line between fantasy and reality for them. Besides, maybe the heroines in these books end up physically and emotionally hurt and violated, but at least their heroes are hot and rich, right?
Right?
That's not quite how it works.
