Title: Deals
Fandom: FF7
Pairing: OT4
Rating:PG
Warnings: some dark content
A/N: Giftmas fic for shay_renoylds :)
Summary: Whereas some make deals and others don't.
Aeris had a deal of sorts with herself.
The moment she had seen Cloud Strife, she had known he was Zack’s Cloud. How many boys had hair like that, after all? And he had such pretty eyes. Zack hadn’t exaggerated about the eyes.
The moment Aeris had touched Cloud Strife, she had known he was broken. His mind and soul were in so many pieces Aeris was afraid of getting cut whenever she moved too close.
So of course she moved closer.
He didn’t recognize her, and Aeris knew Zack had talked about her. He was Zack, after all. But Cloud didn’t recognize her, and Aeris knew there weren’t that many flowergirls out there.
Aeris didn’t take offense. Cloud didn’t recognize himself, either.
So Aeris made herself a deal as she fell in love with those vulnerable blue eyes, just like Zack predicted she would. She would win his heart and then tell him everything. Along the way, she would try to win his soul back, too.
Dying threw a wrench in things. Aeris did it, anyway, telling herself that Tifa loved Cloud and that Tifa would try to fix what had been broken.
Death meant Aeris was supposed to let Cloud go.
She succeeded in dying but failed, otherwise.
She didn’t let him go.
She didn’t let any of her boys go.

Zack had made a deal of sorts with himself.
He promised anything and everything if Cloud would just survive. He could be content with that. He had no gods, but he knew Cloud and Aeris did, and he promised anything and everything if Cloud could just survive, could just crawl his way to Aeris.
It occurred to Zack too late that he should have stuck with Aeris’ gods. Cloud warned him before of the distant cruelty of his own.
Zack had promised his life for Cloud’s, his breath for Clouds, his heartbeat. He hadn’t thought of Cloud’s mind or sanity. Aeris could fix those. He believed in Aeris.
From Nibelheim to Midgar, Aeris became his goddess.
He should have devoted more of his prayers to her.
But Zack had made a deal, and it hurt to finally see light in Cloud’s eyes even as his own died, but Cloud would survive, and that was all that mattered.
Zack had promised to let Cloud go if he just survived.
Cloud survived, but Zack couldn’t bring himself to follow through on his deal.
He didn’t let him go.
He didn’t let any of them go.
